Desktop Installation

Important: Are you running Windows Vista or Windows 7? See settings, below.
  • Download the set-up file from www.narrative1.com. Save this file to your desktop or other easily accessible location.
  • Close Word, Excel, Outlook and any programs that uses these files (Some residential software programs use Word to process addenda). It is best to close all programs.
  • Macros must be enabled for Word and Excel for the software install.

    • Office 2000 & 2003: 
      1. Click Tools
      2. Macros
      3. Security and select Medium or Low. Low is very safe if you have anti-virus software.

    • Office 2007:
  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button
  2. Click Excel Options
  3. Click Trust Center, click Trust Center Settings
  4. Click Macro Settings and select Medium or Low. Low is safe if you have anti-virus software.
  5. Important: See additional Office 2007/2010 and Later settings at the bottom of this page.

    • Office 2010 and Later:
      1. Click the Excel or Word File tab
      2. Click Excel Options.
      3. Click Trust Center, click Trust Center Settings
      4. click Macro Settings  and select Medium or Low. Low is safe if you have anti-virus software.

  • Find and double-click Narrative1 set up file. 
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.

When the installation is done, Narrative1 is accessed from Start > Programs > Narrative1 > Narrative1 Start.

This will open the Narrative1 Dashboard, described here.

Network Installation
  1. Install Narrative1 software on the server.
  2. Share the Narrative1 Templates folder and Work folder.
  3. Install the software on each workstation (please see our licensing policy).
  4. Open the Narrative1 Dashboard on each workstation and set the network path.

Database Setup
  • Open a new appraisal file (N1Appraisal.xls). Start > Programs > Narrative1 > Narrative1 Start. Open any N1Appraisal.xls file.
  • From File Info sheet (the first tab), click the Database Setup button from the upper right corner and enter the connection info supplied in the email from support@narrative1.com.
  • After testing the connection, click Apply.
Registration & User Privileges
Click the Registration button from the upper right corner and enter the registration info supplied in the email from support@narrative1.com.
  • Associate Privileges
    • Create & edit appraisals
    • Enter and edit comparable sales and rentals.
    • Create Autotext Entries

  • Administrator Privileges
    • Create & edit appraisals
    • Enter & edit comparable sales and rentals.
    • Delete database records
    • Add/remove/format database fields
    • Delete Autotext entries
    • Create backup files


Windows Vista / Windows 7 Settings
Navigate to the Programs Files (x86)\Narrative1 folder and set Security as noted in the graphic below:

Office 2007/2010 and Later Settings
  1. Office 2007: Click the Microsoft Office Button in Word or Excel (Top left)

    Office 2010 and Later: Click the Excel or Word File tab

  2. Click Word Options or Excel Options, lower right

  3. Click Trust Center, then Trust Center Settings



  4. Add the Narrative1 program folder and sub-folders to the list of trusted locations.
